1714 AXA-DBDS Project: Tailoring Skills for Women from Chinchwad Slums
Pune (Chinchwad), September 2024: The Don Bosco Development Society (DBDS) has launched a new batch of its tailoring training program, designed to empower women from the slums of Chinchwad. This initiative, part of the 'Women Empowerment Project,' is supported by AXA Global Business Services and provides 11 women with two months of intensive training.
Under the guidance of Mrs. Shanno Mallik, the participants are being trained in foundational and advanced tailoring skills. The training starts with basic exercises like cutting patterns on newspapers and then progresses to working with fabric. After cutting the designs, the trainees learn to stitch the garments under Mrs. Mallik’s close supervision.
The program is divided into two phases:
Phase 1: Foundational Skills
• Stitching techniques
• Dress measurement methods and techniques
• Understanding garment anatomy and drafting
• Calculating and drafting patterns
• Techniques for folding fabric for patterns
• Tailoring terminology
Phase 2: Practical Garment Making
• Jabala (a top for newborns or small children)
• Frock petticoat
• Summer frock
• Yoke frock
This hands-on training aims to equip the women with marketable skills, empowering them to secure better livelihoods and contribute to their families' financial well-being.
